TOOL OF THE TRADE

Japanese Twisty Cleaning Brush

Whether cleaning floors or scrubbing pots, this brush is up for any task. The stiff yet flexible bristles come from the palm fibers of coconuts. First, the coconut is harvested, cut into pieces, and soaked in water for around a month. At that point, a machine separates the husk from the fibers, which are by then strong and tough enough to be formed into a brush using sturdy metal wire. The twisty shape allows for deep cleaning of harder-to-reach spots, such as in teapots and tall drinking glasses, while the natural lipids of palm fiber help to prevent mold and rot. Depending on how you’re using the brush, you can customize the softness by buffing the bristles with a pumice stone.
