“I have cerebral palsy, which makes it hard for me to walk and do things others take for granted, like buttoning shirts or tying shoelaces.” Alex’s mom got Alex into the public baths as a baby in Germany where he was born. “I liked the feel of the warm water although I was scared at first.” Alex started swimming lessons at the local YMCA in Maine where he lives now when he was five. “I hated it at first. My mom made me go in, and I cried a lot. Then I felt safer in the water and started to enjoy it.” When he was 10, Alex joined the Pen Bay Sailfish swim team and has been swimming with them every year since then. “I swim three times a week, but sometimes I feel lazy and don’t want to, but then my parents make me!” Alex jokes. “My favorite thing to do in the water is just float around and move at my own pace. I love feeling weightless. In the water I can move around without struggling all the time and I like that.” Cerebral palsy leaves Alex’s muscles tight, and swimming helps to keep them loose and also keeps him fit. “My mom says that I have a special smile that I only have in the water. I guess I am pretty happy there.”
