Mark Cavendish won the sprinters' points classification in 2007, while riding for T-Mobile. While riding for Team Sky, and as reigning World Road Race Champion, he took three stage wins in 2012, including the final sprint on the final day up Guildford's cobbled High Street.

The 2013 route takes in the Scottish Borders, the Lake District, Snowdonia National Park and a summit finish on Dartmoor, before finishing with a flourish on London's Whitehall.

Giro Rosa

Formerly known as the Giro d'Italia Femminile, as of 2013 the race was rebranded as the Giro Rosa ('pink tour') and reduced to eight days. Nicknamed the Giro Donne ('women's tour'), it is the only Grand Tour left in the women's calendar after lack of sponsorship saw the Tour de France Féminin and the Tour de L'Aude fall by the wayside in recent years. First raced in 1988, the Giro Donne has been won most times (five) by Italian rider Fabiana Luperini. Nicole Cooke is the only British rider to have won, in 2004, and Britain's Emma Pooley finished runner-up in 2011 and 2012, on both occasions to the top women's rider of recent years, the Dutchwoman Marianne Vos.
