CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jess stopped earlier than normal, since he found the perfect spot to set up camp. There were some boulders along a river with a copse of trees.

“Why are we stopping so early?” Jamie asked as Jess climbed out of the saddle.

“Because this is a perfect spot for a camp. We have water, grass for the horses to feed on and those trees will provide us some cover.”

“Alright, maybe I’ll try to shoot a rabbit or two for supper,” he said as he climbed down from the saddle. “I’m gettin’ tired of beans and jerky.”

Jess went about setting up the camp while Jamie walked along the river hunting for rabbits. After Jess had the camp ready, he got out a piece of line and a hook. He kicked over a few small rocks and found a few worms for bait. He was pulling in his second fish when he heard the rifle crack. He was finishing up with cleaning the fish when Jamie came walking back holding onto a large fat rabbit.

“Looks like it is rabbit and fish for supper,” Jess grinned.

Jamie went into the woods and came back with an armful of wood for the fire. Jess fried the fish first and they ate that while the rabbit fried in the pan. When it got close to dark, Jess put some more wood on the fire. Jamie frowned as he watched him do it.

“You always put the fire out before dark,” he said.

“I know, but not tonight,” he said plainly. “Get your bedroll and some extra blankets.” The two of them both got their bedrolls out placed them on the ground.

“Now, watch me and do what I do,” Jess told Jamie as he bunched up some blankets under the bedroll to make it look like someone was sleeping in it. Then he took his hat off and laid it at the top, propping it up with a small stick.

“Why are we doing this and where are we going to sleep?” asked Jamie.

“Lay your Henry rifle against your saddle like this,” he told him as he placed one of his Winchester’s on his.

“I’m confused,” muttered Jamie as he did what he was told.

“Now get my extra Winchester out of the scabbard on Sharps,” he told him as he slid the Winchester out of the saddle on the ground. Jess removed one canteen and grabbed some jerky from the saddlebags and turned to see a confused Jamie standing by the fire.

“What in the hell are we doing?” Jamie asked in a strained voice.

“Just follow me,” he told him as he headed for the trees.

“Alright, but I still don’t understand all this,” he carped as they walked inside the trees.

The two of them sat inside for about three hours, all the while Jamie complaining about being tired and cold from the night air. Jess kept telling him to be quiet, but he continued to complain in whispers. A little while later, Jess heard the sounds of one of his cans with rocks being tripped and he smiled inwardly.
