4. Godâs purpose is nestled inside your nature and nurture
Your nature is made up of a mix of qualities that belong to you by birth, by parentage and heritage, as well as through Godâs construction of both events around you, and His supernatural work in you. The unique combination of elements that combine to make you who you are means that you will have preferences, likes and dislikes, along with some things that will come more naturally to you than others.
God wants you to discover what you do well naturally. What is easy for you? What do you love to do? Where do you feel most comfortably in your element? Conversely, what feels alien to you? When do you feel uninspired, incapacitated or restricted?
Jonah was a preacher. He had already spent many years of his life relaying positive messages from God and it was what he did best. To all intents and purposes, being a prophet of God came naturally to him. It fitted like a glove. Yet, with the call to Nineveh, Jonah rejected the will of God and plunged himself into a tumultuous world of confusion where nothing worked and everything was irksome. The landlubber tried to be a sailor, and he ended up all at sea! God had not called Jonah to something beyond his anointing or outside of his nature, but something that matched his personality and abilities. Until he realigned himself to this divine call, he would never be at peace.
Likewise, God will not call you to something you do not already have the capacity to enjoy or draw great fulfilment from. How easily we assume that God will call us to an inhospitable place crawling with deadly snakes and huge spiders, when we have a morbid fear of both! Leave that to David Attenborough! How easily we believe the lie that God will ignore our preferences and unique nature for the sake of His own agenda. We leave ourselves in a place of limbo when we fail to understand that the call of God for our lives is full of promise, and full of grace, and usually aligns us with that which we always wanted to do, if only in our dreams. He knows your nature and He knows what comes naturally to you. When God is in the call, you will excel at everything you do. Not only that, but you will find your passion for it increases, your connection to people becomes stronger, and the favour on your life can be seen by everyone you meet.
Are you currently living your dream with God? Jonah turned away from his dream and it was then that his worst nightmare began. He was no more in his element as a sailor than he was as a deep-sea diver, and his life would not be at rest until he returned to what came naturally or rather, supernaturally to him. In chapter 2 Jonah would come to understand and confess that those who go outside of Godâs best for their lives forfeit the grace to live it well.
