Once we were back in the Jeep, I held my hands up to the vents while Zane cranked the heat. Bernie snuggled into my lap, glaring at me until I stopped moving my legs. I tucked my chilly hands under his furry little tummy, earning yet another glare.

“What do we do now?” Zane asked, propping his arm up on my seat.

“I think we should check in with Kelsie and then pay a visit to Mallory. Hopefully, by now she’s gotten in touch with her friend.”

Zane cocked his head to the side before touching my forehead with his hand.

“What?”

“This is the first time since I’ve known you that you haven’t mentioned food,” he said, giving me a crooked grin. “I was making sure you weren’t sick. It’s lunchtime, and you skipped breakfast.”

“Ha ha.”

He wasn’t wrong, though. Strangely enough, I wasn’t the least bit hungry.

“Well, I could eat,” Bernie said with a sniff. “Not that anyone asked me.”

I chuckled as I dialed Kelsie’s number.

“We’ll grab something soon, bud,” I said, right as Kelsie picked up. “Oh, hi Kels. How’s Logan? Is everything okay?”

“I’m not sure.”

Her voice sounded shaky, and I sat straight up, jostling Bernie. Luckily, he’d heard Kelsie too, so I didn’t earn another icy glare.

“What do you mean? What’s wrong? Do you want us to head your way?”

“No, no. Sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you. Logan’s still sound asleep, but he’s moaning now. It’s the strangest sound. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.”

I shot Zane a look and picked at the fabric of my jeans.

“Did you give him another dose of Mallory’s herbs?”

Zane leaned closer, and I tapped the button on my phone to put the call on speaker.

“I did. That seemed to quiet him. Brynn, I don’t know how much longer I can take this. Seeing him lying there helpless is terrible. Did you find anything out?”

I didn’t want to get her hopes up, but the desolation in her voice stabbed me right through the heart.

“We’re making progress, Kelsie. Good progress. We’re going to see Mallory now and see if her friend has any advice. I’ll let you know what we find out.”

“Hurry, Brynn. I was thinking about this contract thing. What if the jinn is lying? What if this is all a game to keep us distracted and right now, he’s separating Logan’s soul from his body?”

A thread of terror wormed its way into my stomach at her words. I hadn’t even considered that. Zane shook his head.

“Kelsie, it’s Zane. I don’t think that will happen. So far, the jinn’s been insistent on rules. There’s got to be some sort of spiritual law that he has to follow. We’ll be in touch soon. Hang tight, okay? We’re just a call away if something changes.”

Somehow, he’d injected his words with a confidence that I didn’t feel. He had a way about him of always being in charge, and that soothed my heart. I could hear the change in Kelsie’s voice as she answered.
