It felt like those childhood whippings from Tante Emma, the love and the violence bound together as one, the pain and the fear and the excitement and the longing for comfort all tangled and struggling against one another, forever encased in one awful wound.

A razor cut on his forearm: now Jake and Roger Heckroth had something else in common. He felt he would never be free of the treacherous little troll. Jake rubbed the scar one last time and headed to his car.
