Jaimie Nawati approached the bakery in the same careful manner he had earlier. After walking around the area, he was satisfied that nothing was out of place or looked suspicious and strode into the establishment. Ehud was sitting at a table in the center of the room surrounded by a group of seven men. They were carrying on a jovial conversation and looking like a bunch of old friends enjoying an evening get together. They hardly reacted when the African ventured inside, though he could tell they noticed him.

It was only when Ehud turned and formally acknowledged Nawati’s presence that the conversation stopped abruptly, and all eyes turned to him. “Ah, here you are,” the Palestinian said jovially as he slowly rose from his chair and waddled a few steps over to greet him. Nawati stood erect as he extended his hand to Ehud.

“These are the men you recruited?” he asked, looking beyond Ehud at the collection of men gathered around the table. There were six in total in a various assortment of attires and levels of physical fitness, ranging from toned athletes to protruding beer guts and the beginnings of facial jowls.

“It’s who I could find on such short notice,” Ehud defended. “But I know all of them, and I can assure you they’re all experienced fighters and highly trained.”

“You can count on all of them to know what they’re doing when the time comes.” Ehud continued to see a questionable expression on his client’s face. “And, I can promise when the shooting starts, they’ll stand their ground and fight.”

“Easy to make such promises in a place like this,” Nawati replied. “It’s only when the fighting starts that I’ll find out if your assurances are true or not.”

The Arab wanted to protest but thought better of it. He understood the African’s concerns and decided it would be best to let the matter slide. Nawati started walking past him and moved closer to the men. They were a rough-looking collection all right, but he had found that looking the part did not necessarily equate to playing the part when it came time.

Having been a fighter does not always amount to having any competent ability. He had seen plenty of tough-looking men with scarred faces and bodies covered with cheap military-type tattoos, delivering cold menacing stares at all who looked in their direction. He had seen several displays of supposed tactical prowess from men anxious to brag about their abilities and show off with exotic stories of their missions and wild fighting moves demonstrated with menacing knives. Nawati had been witness to many such people who when it came time had proved far less capable than their self-created reputations could produce.

Following a quick scan of the group, Nawati turned his attention back to Ehud. “I assume you don’t have any alternates to call if I reject any of them?”

Ehud replied looking uncomfortable. “Not as quickly as you need them. For those you reject, we will not be able to find replacements.”

Exasperated, Nawati turned back to the men.
