THRACK

CLAIRE!” Valerie shrieked as she came running into the room.

Cameron stood in shock, staring at the torso of Claire Winston. Blood pumped from her body in time to her still-beating heart. Her eyes were fixed on his and he was hypnotized. Her lips moved yet no sound issued. He watched as blood began to seep from her mouth and a red bubble formed on her lips.

Despite all of this, or maybe because of it, he was able to grab Valerie as she tried to run past him to her childhood friend. His arms wrapped around Valerie’s waist, and he was successful in preventing her from running to Claire’s side. Cameron’s eyes never left Claire’s and he watched as the life seeped out of her. His mind was blank. He had killed her. He had taken a life.

A part of him shut down at that moment and he turned, leaving Claire to die alone on the bed as he dragged his ex-girlfriend out of the room and past the others into the hallway. He passed Patrick and handed Valerie off to him as though she were a doll that he was done playing with. He knew the others were speaking to him. A part of him heard their words, saw their faces, yet he ignored them all and continued walking down the hall back to the great room and the dead man on the floor.

Trevor watched as Cameron exited the room and walked past them into the hall. Valerie crumbled when she was with Patrick. Her words were incoherent due to her sobs as she sat on the floor and cried. The only thing she was capable of doing was pointing into the room.

Trevor pushed past the others who blocked the door yet seemed incapable of entering the room out of fear. Sheridan’s death had been too soon. And with the corpse in the great room, he didn’t blame them for their fear.

But it was Claire.

They may have grown apart after that last summer, but she was his first love. And she held a special place in his heart. One filled with good memories from his youth.

“Don’t man,” Richard said, putting a hand on his chest to stop him. He was the last to bar his way. From behind Richard, he heard a steady thump against the wall. That, and an incessant dripping, as though someone had left the water on in the sink just enough to cause the drip.

His eyes strayed past Richard and he saw the blood that covered the room. It was, quite literally, everywhere. He pushed Richard who held his ground, not letting him pass.

“Let me go,” he warned.

“I mean it,” Richard insisted, keeping him from taking another step closer.

Trevor heard a sigh from the room, and he shoved Richard aside. She is alive, his mind railed. “She’s alive you asshole!”

Richard bounced against the wall after being pushed but did nothing further to stop his friend. He had already seen what awaited him. He hung his head as Trevor’s wails of grief rose from Claire’s bedside.
