Its value will not be measured by material things. It will have nothing, and yet it will have everything, and whatever one takes from it, it will still have, so rich it will be . . . It will be as wonderful as the personality of a child.

It is not merely the child who is a symbol of the liberated ‘soul’ under socialism. Another important symbol is the figure of Christ, Wilde says, whose secret or ‘message’ was ‘simply “Be Thyself”’. In Wilde’s rendering of him, Christ is a saviour not because he redeemed humankind from its sins, but because he lifted his subjects out of servitude and subjection, insisting to each of them:
