THREE YEARS EARLIER

WILLIAM

The estate agent’s name is Miranda, and I waste no time in checking out her impressive curves whenever she turns her back to me. I’ve certainly stolen plenty of sneaky glances during this thirty-minute appointment as she shows me around this small but suitable property that I am considering putting an offer in for.

‘Here’s the master bedroom,’ Miranda says as she leads me into a room with a double bed, nightstand and a wardrobe in the corner.

It’s not the biggest room, but none of the rooms in this house are big. But there’s a charm about its size, and while it’s much smaller than the house I share with my wife, I don’t need this one to be big.

I just need it to stay a secret.

‘This is nice,’ I say as I inspect the interior. ‘And all the furniture is included?’

‘That’s right. Everything you see here can stay if you want it.’

‘Excellent,’ I say, because it will certainly save me a lot of money and trouble if I don’t have to go furniture shopping once I have the keys to this place.

I take a seat on the edge of the bed to assess the firmness of the mattress. The thought runs through my mind that I might invite Miranda to take a seat beside me. But that might be a little too forward even for me, so I decide against it. The last thing I need is her calling me out as a creep and ending this appointment early, thus denying me the chance to hopefully become the owner once all the paperwork is sorted out in due course. But that doesn’t mean I’m not planning on inviting her out for a drink once all the technicalities are out of the way, and who knows, with a bit of luck, Miranda might find herself back here again, albeit in a very different capacity to the one she is in now.

I hope she’s wearing the same outfit then, too.

I smile to myself as I follow Miranda around the remaining upstairs rooms, but there is nothing in the rest of this guided tour that causes me to reconsider my plans, and by the time we are back downstairs again, I am ready to make my intentions clear.

‘Well, I have to say that this is exactly what I’m looking for,’ I begin, and Miranda looks pleased, no doubt already envisaging how she’ll spend whatever commission she’ll receive if she is successful in selling this place.

‘That’s wonderful to hear. I had a feeling you would like it. It really is a nice house.’

‘Yes, it is. With that in mind, I’m going to put in an offer, and I’d like to move quickly on this.’

‘Well, I can certainly try to make that possible, sir, depending on the seller accepting the offer, of course.’

Of course. But I think they’ll like it. I’m going to pay the full asking price outright with a single bank transfer.’

‘Oh, so you’re a cash buyer?’ I watch as she struggles to keep her voice professional.
