When I woke, it was early morning, and Rey was getting ready to go out. He put on the jacket of his suit and turned to me. “Good morning.” He sat on the mattress and touched my forehead. “How are you feeling?”

“The same,” I said, not wanting to elaborate. The same meant shitty. With much effort, I sat up. I propped a pillow behind me and leaned back. “Going to class?”

“Now that I see you’re awake and well, I think so,” he said. “Unless you’re not feeling well and want me to stay.” He checked his phone. “I know your mother has an important meeting to go to, and the others have class … but I can stay with you until someone can take my place.”

I tsked. “Nah, I’m okay.”

Rey’s gray eyes turned almost silver with worry. It had been the look stamped on his pretty face for the past couple of days, and even though he was still handsome, I hated being the one to give him such trouble. “I don’t like leaving you alone.”

“As you said, it’ll be only for a little while. I think I can survive.” I reached for my phone on the nightstand. “I promise to text you if something happens.” I forced a small smile on my lips. “Go. Teach your class. Do something for the both of us.”

Rey reached for my hand. He laced his fingers on mine. “Don’t just text me if something happens. Text me every five minutes, letting me know you’re fine.”

I chuckled. “Five minutes? No. Half an hour.”

“Ten minutes,” he rebuked.

“Twenty.”

“Fine, fifteen. Every fifteen minutes. I won’t accept less than that.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, sir. Fifteen minutes.”

He pointed to the nightstand on his side of the bed, where a tray with breakfast waited for me. “Eat something.”

“I will, sir,” I teased, pushing his hand away. “Now go before you’re late.”

With a groan, Rey planted a quick peck on my lips before standing up. He checked his suit in the mirror one more time, then marched out of the bedroom.

I glanced at the tray and wrinkled my nose. Nope, no stomach for food. I rolled on to my side and lay back on the bed. I was sick and tired of staying in bed like an invalid, but what else could I do? How could I fight against a curse when I couldn’t even use my magic?

This sucked hard.

A moment later, I heard the front door closing. Rey had left for his class, and I instantly missed him. I knew he couldn’t, and shouldn’t, babysit me all day, but I hated that he was leaving me here alone.

Since I had nothing else to do, I closed my eyes, trying to sleep again. Perhaps if I rested as my body seemed to want it, I would feel stronger soon.

As if.

I must had fallen asleep and woken up hours later, because I heard the front door opening, and then footsteps coming up the stairs. Rey was back. From what I remembered of his schedule, he didn’t have any classes this afternoon and he could stay with me.
