Jackson and Terrence lived in a pretty little subdivision that was exactly what Jackson and Remy had planned on living in when they’d been together. It was funny how his dreams had become someone else’s with the man who’d once meant the world to him.
They turned onto Jackson’s street. “You want to talk about it?” Deacon asked, threading their hands.
“You’ve read my file. You know what happened,” Remy hedged, his gut beginning to churn.
“That is the Reader’s Digest version, and you know it. I want to hear your version,” Deacon rebuked gently. He pulled into a spot on the street between two houses so that he wasn’t blocking anyone’s driveway.
“Jackson and I met when we were eighteen at a Wolfen conference in the French Quarter. He’d come from Baton Rouge to meet with the new Wolfen Alpha, and we hit it off. Long story short, during the next full moon we went running together and mated. He moved down from Baton Rouge in with me at my apartment and got a job with the same company I used to work at. I was really in love with him.” He paused as the emotions of betrayal began to surface. He hadn’t thought they’d be so intense this far away from the actual event, but they were. He squeezed Deacon’s hand. “I found him with Terrence, another guy from our office, when I came back early from a trip up to Milwaukee. He broke my heart, and I haven’t looked back since. I didn’t want to be hurt again, so I made a pact with myself that I’d never care about anyone else.” He raised his eyes and met Deacon’s sympathetic gaze. “At least until you.” No matter that their relationship had started off as purely sexual or that Deacon still wasn’t ready to admit his affections, Remy did care about him. It was just right. Mine. Ours. Mate. In that he and the wolf were in perfect agreement.
“It’ll be okay, Wolf Boy. I’ll be here with you the entire time. You can do this,” Deacon said. The reassurance in his voice was perfect. It was just what Remy needed.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. You ready to go?” Deacon asked.
Remy nodded. It was time he laid the last bit of his past to rest.
He opened the car door and climbed out of the car, Deacon followed. He glanced at his piece of paper. The house number was three forty-one. He glanced up and got a good look at the house. It was a lovely tan color with dark-green shutters and a neatly kept lawn. Someone had planted summer roses along the sidewalk leading up to the front door. He knew it wasn’t Jackson. The man had killed every house plant that Remy had brought into the house.
Deacon stepped onto the walkway beside him and twined their hands again, reminding him that he had his back. Taking a deep breath to fortify his courage, he walked up to the door and rang the doorbell.
