As he plodded back, the shadows in the forest had lengthened. As Number 9 got to the fields, he picked up his pace—any shred of alcohol now seemed to have evaporated as he rushed onward. Number 9 was unable, or rather refused to gaze to the far side of the plateau where the scarecrow-thing would be waiting. However, he could not help himself—so with a quick glance he made sure the black silhouette had not moved from before. Even as a distant blur, it made him shudder.

As he rushed to the Village and his room, the buzz had now been replaced by a pre-hangover. He was glad to hit his head on the pillow a little early. It was 7:04 as he closed his eyes. But, sleep did not come.

He knew it would though.

And he knew at what time.
