CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Tobias

Detective Tobias stood outside one of the shiniest skyscrapers in central London which happened to house the Barnett Law firm. He wasn’t supposed to be here. If his boss knew, he would be in trouble for sure.

He couldn’t believe he was risking his job to meet the demands of a potentially psychotic and delusional woman. Ideally, he should report her ludicrous behaviour to Diane — on a professional level of course — and get her admitted into a psych ward pronto. But something about Mrs Webber made him feel uneasy. She was a very intelligent, successful individual; who could say what she was capable of if she were angry enough?

Naturally, after Mrs Webber had made that call, he had left it to Matthew to do a quick search on the lawyer — just to be absolutely certain about who he was dealing with. To his surprise, they had stumbled across a police report from about a decade ago. Mrs Webber had reported a break-in at her university dormitory; although it turned out that the culprit was actually her boyfriend at the time, who had wanted to surprise her.

Was this just purely a case of history repeating itself? Was this some sort of desperate call for attention? Or had Mrs Webber actually been suffering from a long-term illness this whole time?

Tobias couldn’t believe that he had been dragged into this, on top of everything else that was going on at work. So much effort had gone into the investigation already. He had even interviewed her husband.

He had spoken to Darren Webber briefly, about an hour after the police had initially been called that day. He appeared to be a genuine, yet reserved sort of fellow. The police had already verified his identity. Tobias had verified it again of course. But Mr Webber’s passport picture matched his appearance. He recited his birthday and address without hesitation. He knew his age. The only thing left would be to run his fingerprints or check his blood type but there was nothing to suggest that they needed to do that.

Mr Webber had been extremely distressed and concerned. Tobias had questioned him about his whereabouts during that day, which hadn’t been unusual and was verified by a simple phone call. He even asked about his wife’s state of mind before the incident. Mr Webber had insisted everything had been normal, apart from the fact that his wife had been behaving differently the past month, most likely due to stress at work. As soon as Tobias began to realise that this case was becoming a bit psychological or psychiatric (whichever it was), he had decided to call up Diane. And lo and behold, Mrs Webber was diagnosed with a condition. Surely his job was done?

Apparently not. Alas, he had been cornered again. Why was it always him? Was it his weakness for pesky, persistent women? How did he manage to get into this situation of being blackmailed? Perhaps he would find what he always suspected: proof
