Do you know that feeling where you are bone tired, but your brain just won’t turn off? That’s where I was as I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to my cat and my boyfriend saw logs. I flipped my pillow over for the third time and let out a slow breath of air, running through the events of the day.

Tearing out the old kitchen at the house in Coppertown with Zane had been fun. What’s not to love about taking out frustration on innocent cabinets and walls? We’d scarfed down a quick dinner and spent some quality time with Bernie, watching television and not thinking about the imp. Well, maybe it’s better to say we’d tried not to think about the imp. Ned’s warning kept whispering in the back of my mind.

I turned on my side and tried holding my breath for a few counts before letting it out. Yeah, this wasn’t working. I slowly slid my legs out of bed and tiptoed towards the door.

“Brynn? Are you okay?”

I winced before nodding. Zane couldn’t sleep through much, and I should’ve known I’d wake him.

“I’m fine. Just restless. I’m going to get some water.”

Soft snores were my only response. Envy pierced my chest as I walked to the kitchen. If only it were that easy. I poured myself a glass of water and leaned against the kitchen cabinets. I tried practicing building my mental wall, but it wasn’t nearly as fun when I didn’t have Bernie telling me I was doing it wrong. I drained my glass and looked around the kitchen, spotting the stack of papers Sophie had given me the day before.

Well, since I was up, maybe reading through the events of the robbery would be a good use of time. I grabbed the pile and headed for the living room, flipping on the table lamp. I’d forgotten to call Sophie to ask about her luck in getting a cat from the shelter. I’d have to do that tomorrow.

I began reading and soon was completely engrossed in the story of Lame Jim and his band of troublemakers. Whoever had written the story had a way with words that captivated me, making the over century old events feel as though they were happening right outside my door.

I turned to another article and sat straight up as I read and then re-read the passage again.

“What are you doing?”

“Gah! You scared the holy heck out of me, cat. How do you do that?”

“Hey, I chirped to let you know I was here. It’s not my fault if you didn’t hear me.”

Bernie hopped onto the couch and snuggled in his favorite spot on my feet, peering into my lap. I stroked his head as I read through the article again.

“It says here that Lame Jim’s sister was known as ‘the woman of the woods’ and feared by many of the locals as a witch. She was much older and raised him when their parents died. Do you think?”

“We finally found the link we were missing.
