The journey had been long and arduous, and Maeve drifted in and out of wakefulness as she thought about what her new life might bring.

She thought that she might ask for the farm work she knew she could do and somewhat comforted with this plan she finally surrendered to sleep.

Chapter Two

It was the practice that the girls were only used when their Master was present, so the day following her arrival Maeve was introduced to the three girls that slept in the second shack.

Together they went out into the large area where the overseer awaited them. Calling over Maria he told her that she had left the washing wet from the previous day.

The girl paled a little, stammering that she had meant to attend to it but had neglected it in the excitement of the new girl’s arrival.
