CHAPTER 10

July 13th.

MONDAY MORNING. CAPITOL HILL was quiet and calm, almost haunting. A slightly overcast sky hung over the city. The horizon glowed with the emerging sun as daylight gradually swept the darkened land as though unveiling it. Beams of golden rays shot across the heavens in reminder to those who stalked the darkness it was time to retreat. Brilliant shades of red and yellow reflected against the structures of the metro skyline. The harmonious chatter of birds filled the air with celebration of the rising sun, almost an aggravation to those it had awakened. Another day was born.

The air was wet. Moisture streaked the window above Tony and Guy's bed. A helicopter hovered above treetops continuing the search for the villain. Squad cars circled the area as they had through the night. Newspaper trucks began routes with more headline terror to the city. Streetlights fluttered, blinking off almost in sequence. The city was coming to life.

Up the street Lobato and Burns sat in her car observing Tony and Guy's apartment. More than ever she believed and was determined to be there when The Butcher tried to strike again. These two were her last hope, possibly the only. Their suspicions had been proven as far as she was concerned. Between their story and her research it was only a matter of timing. And should her timing be off at all it could cost another life, probably more.

All confusion seemed to surface. The only thing missing was The Butcher himself. She, like The Butcher, was waiting for the time and place. He waited for his victims to fall into his hands; she waited for him to fall into hers. A race only time could judge.

In heavy thought she drove away to once again solve what threatened this horror stricken city.

LIGHT CREPT THROUGH THE cracked shade revealing two entwined bodies. The room was calm. Silence stayed in rhythm with the humming clock. Water dripped from the bathroom faucet, its echo bouncing off walls carrying through the stillness.

Guy tossed and turned trying to ignore the aggravation, finally climbing out of bed trying not to awaken Tony. Although he had slept his mind and body felt exhausted. What used to be the greatest part of life, waking to greet a new day, was now a burden. Nowadays he greeted the day as he had bid it farewell, unsettled and haunted by fear. To greet a new day was only to bring what he felt in his heart closer.

He staggered into the bathroom to shut off the faucet. At least it had relieved him of the nightmare that had taken over his sleep.

In the kitchen he sat waiting for the coffee pot to complete its morning task. His mind roamed the vividness of his imagination and bizarreness of his fears as he gazed out into nowhere. The steaming liquid finally was ready.

One blessing to wake to on this day was work. There he could escape the fears that haunted him day and night. He wondered what new events the day would bring in their direction.
