Chapter Eighteen

Taylor felt as though he’d made progress when Harold began exercising with him. He’d even given Taylor some pointers on how to target certain muscles in his body and he always told Taylor to tighten his core, which consisted of tensing his stomach muscles.

“Pushups are fine as long as you keep your core strong and your back straight.” Harold was a powerhouse. It was amazing how fast he did pushups. He never once ran out of breath.

Keeping up with him was impossible, so Taylor decided not to make it a competition. Besides that, he learned a lot from him. “How’d you learn so much about fitness?”

“In college. I had a steady thing with this chick who loved the gym. She was studying to be a trainer.” Harold never stopped his up-and-down motion. He wasn’t even out of breath. “One night she was walking home from a party. I didn’t go because I was sick with the flu. Some stomach shit that had run through the whole dorm. Some fucker raped and killed her. Left her body in a patch of trees on campus.”

Taylor sucked in a breath. That poor girl. How horrible. “I’m so sorry.”

“Yeah, well, I tracked down the guy who did it before the police got to him. I gave him what was coming to him.” The world was better off without some people. Taylor would give Harold that much. Taylor wondered if killing had desensitized him or if he’d always been just a little twisted. He seemed to disregard a person’s right to live and maybe that was the price he had to pay for taking someone’s life, even if that person was a murderer. Taylor also wondered if Harold ever asked himself how he was different from the person who killed that girl.

Harold wouldn’t escape the paranormals. The only way he’d get out of jail was if he made nice with them, and he wasn’t likely to do that considering his penchant for killing everyone he didn’t like.

“What happened?”

“The campus cops found pieces of the guy. Not all of him. But enough to identify the body. They knew I did it but couldn’t find enough evidence to pin it on me. About four months later, some kid came forward with a video of me knocking Shayla’s killer over the head with a pistol and putting him in my car. Cops arrested me.”

“The charges didn’t stick?” Taylor figured something must have happened or Harold would be in the human prison system instead.

Harold stopped his workout and sat on the floor. He met Taylor’s gaze. “Have you ever heard of Spider Sylvain?”

Taylor kept pushing, although he was aware of how Harold studied him, as if his answer would tell Harold something about Taylor. Taylor didn’t know what so he’d answer it honestly. “Can’t say I have. Is he someone important?”

Harold chuckled. “In certain circles. He got me out of trouble.”

“How’d he do that?” Taylor had a feeling he already knew the answer.

“With threats and money.”

“And you ended up working as a hit man for him?”

“No.
