“I cannot send you the manuscripts as they are not yet finished.

I have been ill as a dog.

My illness has had a pernicious effect on the Preludes

Which you will receive God knows when.”

Thus the real Chopin. The words less than eloquent, the attitude less than heroic. Yet Fontana did receive the Preludes, after all, and in their sound Chopin’s illness transmutes itself yet once more by becoming, through the piano, the sound of a voice. Not his voice, but a floating voice that can become the listener’s, here Lowell’s, and impart to it a saving undertone. Lowell makes that undertone audible at the end of the poem in a series of almost-rhyming i-sounds as she advises her cat to quench her—whose?—thirst: “Therefore, Winky, drink some milk / And leave the mouse until to-morrow.”
