SHERYL WAS THE PERSON who Watkins trusted most which was why he asked Rick to call her. She followed the directions by first checking on Pearlâs place before driving to the field aware that there was something to do with a house. The sight of a massive structure was startling but as an officer she stuck to her training.
Following fresh tracks to the building, she paused along the way to examine the condition of a pickup which sat mid-pasture as weirdly out of place as the dwelling. The broken glass and blood surrounding the vehicle prompted her to yell for the sheriff. A gunshot fired at the rear of the structure caused her to run to the source which ended in the coworkers colliding.
Now with her boss accounted for, the female officer finally did what instinct begged of her upon arrival, she stared at the house while Watkins placed a hand on her shoulder to steady her, understanding full well the sense of imbalance the strange real estate brought with it.
âJesus, Frank, how?â
âI canât begin to tell you what weâre looking at here, but I need your help.â
âThat smell. Is it what I think it is?â
There was no reason to show her the ghastly sights, so he nodded hoping she would not wander any farther. She was her own woman though, so he could not stop her if she wanted a gander. âAround the back, two DOA.â
âWe should call for backup, the state, maybe Feds, perhaps...â
âA house just shat itself onto this field. This was not an overnight church barn building. The clapboards are old and weathered, this puppy has existed elsewhere for a lot longer than it has here. Who do you suggest we dial? HUD? Let them know someone built without a permit?â
âThis is crazy.â
âThings get crazier. Did you check on Pearl?â
Sheryl remained focused on the home, lost in thought.
âDeputy! Was Pearlâs place checked?â
Watkins hated pulling the superior card but occasionally the pair slipped into an almost married pattern. When needed they resorted to calling each other by work titles. It helped them focus.
âYes, Sheriff. Pearl was not home. Her Pontiac was still in the yard, and like most in these parts, she kept her door unlocked. I entered and searched. Her place was not that big, took minutes, impeccable cleaning skills for an older woman. I assumed it to be a welfare check. When I did not find her, I figured a bus must have arrived and left already even though I didnât hear a call over the radio.â
âI never sent an ambulance. I believe Pearl is in this house.â
âHere, without her car? Who gave her a lift? No way she could walk this far.â
âLetâs move past all that. More pressing is how we can get in because I fear everyone inside to be in imminent danger.â The sheriff looked at his deputy, those Disney eyes so wide while she tried to understand. âYou trust me, right?â
âWith my life, Frank. Another time, different place you and I, you know that.
