Chapter thirty-eight
Darkness swallowed Charlie and Suzy as they navigated blindly through the center section of the basement. The TV host took point, which meant absorbing the brunt of each uneven step and colliding with support columns that, without a light source, were discoverable only through unexpected bodily contact. The position placed him in the role of the canary to Suzyâs coal mine, keeping her safe from the same blindside body checks. Maintaining a grip on her hand while moving at a snailâs pace, he found circumstance occasionally caused them to brush against one another while traversing the obsidian expanse. A rush of excitement accompanied every touch of the strange woman, and he wondered whether she felt the same.
âSo, Suzy, tell me about yourself.â
âI ran the Boston marathon in under two hours, prefer taxis over Uber, volunteer at homeless shelters, and collect exotic fruits.â
âFor real?â
âNo, none of that, because it doesnât matter if I offer you truth or lies right now. Lord knows Iâve created plenty of false identities lately.â
âOkay, so that last part sounded truthful. Look, we share something in common and we need to find out what it is.â
âSo, you believe the politician?â
âMore than ever. At the least, I have solidified my belief that we entered through a portal. Otherwise, the officer would have walked through a front door. The question becomes why?â
She jerked him to a stop, their positioning and proximity to one another uncertain in the pure dark. âAre you for real?â
âWhat? I host a show on the paranormal. It doesnât meanâ¦â
âNo. Are you trying to find answers, really? Or only attempting to pick at my wounds, dig out the scarred woman, offer to fix her, then move in for the kill? Are you playing a long game?â
âSuzy, I enjoy your attributes, not you per se, since we do not know each other. I donât know how to make it any clearer. Full disclosure, two seconds ago, I thought how it was nice to feel your body against mine. I am not proud to have such thoughts, but Iâd like to enter into evidence the fact I told you as much. Iâm just being honest. We need to be truthful to figure this all out.â
Breathing in resignation, she let go of his arm. âMy real name is Amelia. I started a new life here as Suzy.â
âWhy?â
âBecause a bad thing happened, something terrible. I am not so innocent, Charlie. Iâ¦â
On the floor, a phone lit up, vibrating while playing a snippet of âEnter Sandman.â
âThatâs his ringtone. There is absolutely no freaking way that is possible.â The device illuminated her frightened face as she picked it up. âCaller ID shows his number, but it cannot be him.â
âCanât be whom?â
âThe man I killed.â
