INSIDE THE CANINE WELLNESS AND HEALTH, THE EXPERT INTERVIEWS
The Body section represents the physical facets of a dog, from breed, size, agility, and exercise to internal aspects of nutrition, health, and wellness management. Beginning with nutrition, more and more dog owners are educating themselves, reading labels, avoiding food filled with grains, and not buying treats or food made in China. Comparable to the global shift that began for humans nearly two decades ago in choosing organic, and buying more produce from farmers’ markets, the pet food industry soon caught up and followed suit. The newfound heightened awareness created by major pet food recalls in 2007 and 2012 revealed that even many United States-based kibble companies were using a premix from China that contained melamine, which was responsible for more than one hundred pet deaths and more than five hundred cases of kidney failure.7 Since then, many pet owners have chosen to forgo processed dog foods and instead feed either raw or home-prepared meals. Clare Kearney, a holistic canine nutritionist from Australia, explains in this section that “holistic nutrition is basically just eating fresh, whole foods from nature” as she guides us through the process of making a balanced and healthy diet from our own kitchens. Speaking of food in the kitchen, we learned how motivating that can be for dogs like Buddy, Harley, Rosie, and Monty, who, when unattended for just a minute, will go to extremes to climb counters, chairs, and tables to devour whatever grub they can find!
Holistic pet care industry leaders Randi and Phil Klein, owners of Whiskers Holistic Pet Care in New York City, have made healthy pet food and supplement education their life’s work. Their store offers a free, open consultation area where they spend time answering a variety of customer questions about all types of dog conditions. Holistic veterinarian Dr. Marty Goldstein discusses revealing insights of the root cause of many of these common conditions, and Dr. Jill Elliot offers homeopathic remedies to treat some of the most common problems. Chief medical officer of the Veterinarian Cancer Center, Dr. Gerald Post, discusses cancer, which has become the most common canine illness today, and offers hope for the future.
Our furry friends often demonstrate acts of physicality that impress, such as Sunny’s dexterity in skillfully opening doors and Buster’s ability to open the refrigerator, throw items in the garbage, and take clothes out of the dryer. There’s also three-legged Cooper, who impresses just by nimbly getting around. Dr. Gene Giggleman explains canine chiropractic care and how to keep their dynamic, muscular, and skeletal systems in alignment, and Kim Freeman gives helpful tips you can do yourself for massage, which dogs like Sedona look forward to. Although some dogs, like the athletic Lou Lou, enjoy a different kind of massage—getting dragged on the grass by her leash—much to the shock of appalled bystanders.
A dog’s breed, age, and size determine the intensity and type of activity that best suit him, and it’s a good idea to speak to your veterinarian when starting a new regimen.
