Outside, the streets had begun to crack, fissures widening with every blow of Kabraqan’s fists. Snow was drifting higher around the rubble of buildings that couldn’t withstand the tremors. Keleem and a few of the Ancients were still upon the battlements, repelling Dsa Leinh as best they could, clinging with tails and feet to the damaged stone of the parapet as the wall visibly shuddered.

Sanalik was attempting to climb the circular mound that rose along the wall, but the violent attack repeatedly sent him sliding back.

“Sanalik!” Carol cried. “Stop!”

The boy turned to see the gods emerge from the temple. He slipped the rest of the way down into the city, then knelt and bowed his head.

Several things happened at once. The wall shook with increased violence, spilling Ancients from the battlements. A crack split the white stone from top to bottom, bursting open a section of the grassy earthworks. Hun Batz and Hun Chowen, crouched for greater momentum, leapt into the air, clearing the wall easily.

A snarling howl came from beyond the wall, followed by an ear-popping thud as the two simian gods landed.

Carol shifted into snatch-bat form and launched into the air. Johnny became a screech owl, catching a swirling thermal to join her aloft. Above the wall, they saw Hun Batz slam his mace into Kabraqan’s back as the frost god attempted to rain blows on the cracked wall. Enraged, Kabraqan spun and back-handed the ape god, sending him sprawling. But Hu Chowen managed to slip behind the obsidian-armored enemy and, pinning his arms, yanked him away from Lolok.

Kabraqan struck out with a stone-booted foot. He landed a kick upon the wall that finally breached it, turning the crack into an open gap at its base.

The Sa Nuu, who had been striving both to keep clear of the titanic struggle and to repel attacks by the Che Winak warriors, howled in victory and streamed through the opening. The ones holding sastunob to the heads of Verónica and Oscar Garza forced them into the city as well. The fighters of Aamaaq Muunh followed fast on their heels.

Hun Chowen had pulled Kabraqan completely away from the city now—the erstwhile god of scribes lay on the ground with the frost lord atop him, arms pinned. The titanic simian wrapped his legs around his foe, seizing his thighs with both feet. Hun Batz stood, yanked his mace from the tree where it had lodged, and began running. The earth bounced with his every stride.

Then the god leapt into the air, lifting his weapon high above his head. He brought it down on the chest of Kabraqan.

Obsidian exploded upward and outward with a deafening boom.

Move, Carol! Johnny shouted into her mind. It’s coming this way!

Carol pulled in her wings and dove, extending them a few seconds later to sweep away from the black shrapnel whizzing through the sky. She was back over the city now, Johnny winging his way beside her. The Sa Nuu were using their sastunob to widen the cracks in the streets, to drill down through Lolok’s very foundations.
