Meanwhile, Elara and Kaelin had decided to leave Rylan and Anya to their duel, facing off as a pair against Landon. They knew it wouldn't be an easy fight, but they were determined to give it their all and besides, it would be good practice.

Landon smirked as he saw the two girls approaching. "Ready to face the might of my earth magic?" he taunted. “I’m not going to go easy on you though.”

Elara and Kaelin shared a quick look before nodding in unison. They knew they had to work together to at least last a few minutes against Landon.

As Landon started to cast his first spell, Elara and Kaelin quickly sprang into action. They each focused their magic on hardening their skin as quickly as they could and then placed the spell to the backs of their minds as they had practised. Then, they began to work together to weave a weak defensive dome of roots around them, hoping to protect themselves from Landon's earth spikes.

Landon's first attack was a series of vines that shot up from the ground to try and grab the two girls, but Elara and Kaelin were prepared, and they used their hardened skin to bat away the vines as they approached.

Then, seeing his opening attack fail, Landon switched tactics and tried to cast an earth spike at them, but Elara and Kaelin quickly dodged out of the way, each rolling to either side of the offensive spell.

The fight continued, with Landon casting these two spells over and over, searching for an opening. Of course, the two girls had no offensive spells of their own to cast, and they both knew they would run out of stamina in no time at all, but they kept to their tactics.

But despite Landon’s best efforts, Elara and Kaelin held their own, using their defensive skills to keep themselves safe for much longer than any of them had expected. They seemed able to weave their individual, weaker protective domes together so that they formed a thicket of sorts, which proved very effective against Landon’s attacks.

Finally though, their stamina faltered and exhaustion set in. The spike that came from underfoot caught Elara in a glancing blow as she tried to dodge out of the way, throwing her into the air and depositing her onto the sand with a loud thud.

“Elara?” Rylan said loudly as he rushed over and knelt over her with a fair amount of concern in his voice.

Elara groaned, feeling the ache in her body from the impact of the earth spike and the ground when she’d fallen. She opened her eyes to see Rylan hovering over her, concern etched on his face.

"I'm okay," she said, sitting up slowly and rubbing the back of her head. "Just got knocked around a bit."

Rylan helped her up and she leaned against him for support, feeling a surge of warmth in her chest as she did so. She quickly shook the feeling off, not wanting to dwell on her crush in front of her friends.
