Cattarina met him in costume, and Jack was happy to hand back the goggles.
âReally!? You got them fixed?â She practically squealed in excitement.
âYeah, the girl you bumped into while I was on a date, she fixed them up,â he told her.
âOoo, smart and sexy,â she purred.
âYes, she is,â Jack agreed. âSo what do these even do?â
âSo, they were programmed to find the generator,â she said, pulling them on. âBut there were a lot of other settings. They should provide some decent night vision for me, and highlight any threats I might not have noticed, especially powered people. When I wore them before, I could see the Knuckleheads from a block away, even when the snow meant I couldnât normally.â
âThose are pretty impressive.â Jack was glad to have them back. Maybe theyâd even help with the teleporter.
âYeah, I didnât have them long, but I miss them like crazy.â She pulled them on. The goggles looked like an almost steampunk version of jewelers goggles, a dark bronze with lenses that could shift and move, reacting seamlessly with the catgirlâs own eyes. âAnd a catgirl that canât see in the dark is a little embarrassing,â she giggled.
âI wasnât going to say anything,â Jack teased.
âGood,â she said, then kissed him on the cheek. âThanks for this!â
âHappy to help.â
They climbed quickly to the nearest roof, and made their way across the neighborhood. They didnât have far to go, but the Boxer appreciated traveling with the catgirl. Unlike Marina, she moved across the roofs even easier than he did. And he loved to watch her small, lithe body move.
Three blocks from the shipping headquarters, Cattarina made them lay down flat.
âLet me test these bad boys out.â
She pressed a button on the side, and the lenses refocused.
âNot bad,â she whispered. âOkay, we got a lady with a gun on the roof. She might also have some night vision goggles of her own. Then thereâs five powered people on the fourth floor.â
âFive?â Jack asked. âIs the woman on the roof powered?â
âYeah.â
âThatâs Babette, then. Sheâs the sharpshooter. But there should only be five total, not six.â That made the Boxer nervous.
âHmmm,â Cattarina mumbled.
She shifted a lens so it telescoped out more.
âAlright, so three people are in one room, sitting around a table or something. Hard to tell, I can only see the powered peopleâs outlines and not furniture or anything, so Iâm just guessing. One is real big, probably Dale, and then a smaller man and woman.â
âThe teleporter, and either Felix or Ryker.â
âProbably,â she agreed. Then she continued her investigation. âOkay, now the other two are a man and a woman. The woman is sitting on the floor, with her hand on the other manâs foot. She seems like sheâs shaking around a lot.â
âWhat the hell?â Jack had no idea what was going on. This was totally unexpected.
âI donât know. Maybe a foot fetish thing?â Cattarina sounded as flummoxed as he was. âBut Iâm one hundred percent sure there are six people with powers in that building.â
âI donât like this, that thereâs another powered gangster we didnât even know about.
