CHAPTER SIXTEEN
EMMA
For the first time since Viv had died, Emma had something to look forward to. She took her time selecting the right outfit to wear to the festival today, her excitement growing when she thought of the invitation Wyatt had extended last weekend.
Last weekend. It was hard to believe how much could happen in a weekâs time. Plans were underway for more changes when not so long ago, life had plodded along, the same routine most days, day after day, week after week.
She didnât know whether to laugh or cry.
Smile, she thought as she held a dress up to herself in the full-length mirror and then discarded it for being too formal. Today she had something to smile about, and this was one smile she wasnât going to be putting on for show.
Her heart sped up when she checked the clock on her bedside table and saw that it was already past noon. Sheâd have to hurry at this point if she didnât want to leave Wyatt wondering where she was. Sheâd already gone through half her drawers and then her closet, but no outfit felt right for the day. It was sunny and warm, with the promise of a cool breeze by this evening, when she planned to still be out, enjoying Wyattâs company, maybe even a dance.

âWish I could take you with me, little guy, but Mommy has a big date today.â
Sullyâs eyes seemed to light up for a moment before taking on a suspicious cast. He watched her carefully from his perch on the bed, as if he knew something she didnât, having been witness to so many of her exchanges with Wyatt.
And, of course, present when Viv gave her unwavering opinions on him.
What would Viv have to say to this? A date at the Founderâs Day Festival? At least Emma thought it was a date. It sure had seemed like one when Wyatt suggested it. At the very least it was more time together, just the two of them, at one of the best attractions the summer offered. Sure, they would run into people; it was bound to happen with something like this. But ultimately, it would be the two of them, having a few drinks. A few laughs.
Heâd known she needed this. And she did. It would be a good day. Even her sisters couldnât dampen it for her with
