Chapter Eight

All day Alysia bathed in the warm aftermath of that brief caress. Several times she found herself staring into space, wrapped in dreamy anticipation of the evening ahead.

Spencer didn’t try to hide his delight. “You’ve been stuck at home for far too long. And I know what the two of you were up to last night when you went outside. You mustn’t be touchy, Alysia. You’ll always catch more flies with honey.”

Alysia recalled what Chase had said about suffocating in sugar, and couldn’t help laughing.

Spencer smiled. “It’s nice to see you happy. Have a good time.”

Alysia almost expected him to rub his hands together.

She did have a good time. She guarded her tongue, careful not to give Chase any excuse to accuse her again of snobbery. Chase too, although his eyes held the lazy amusement that often roused her to defensiveness, refrained from baiting her, the amusement gradually becoming a smoldering promise.

And they ended the evening in each other’s arms, sharing long, spine-tingling kisses.

“Will your father be waiting up for you?” he asked her at last, his forehead resting against hers, his arms still loosely holding her.

“No. He goes to bed quite early these days. Do you want to come in…for coffee?”

They’d had coffee at the restaurant, but Chase said, “Yes.”

He helped her out of the car and kept his arm around her waist while she let them in. As she made to slip away from his hold and head for the kitchen he turned her fully into his arms and began kissing her again, walking her backward toward the lounge.

When they reached it, she freed her mouth and laughingly enquired, “What about the coffee?”

“The hell with coffee.” He swept her right off her feet, striding to the wide sofa and sinking down on it, capturing her mouth again with his.

Everyone at the Clarion soon knew the deputy editor was dating the boss’s daughter.

Alysia felt almost drunk with a strange combination of desire, frustration, and mental and emotional stimulation. Just talking to Chase was as bracing as a walk in the wind, and he had only to look at her to make her skin hot and deliciously aware. When he took her in his arms she felt like a melting flame, and his hand on her breast or stroking her thigh burned her soul.

That he hadn’t tried to make love to her fully she put down to his knowing that Spencer wouldn’t approve.

Sometimes she deliberately goaded him, wanting to know if his desire for her was stronger than his respect for her father. But each time he pushed her away in the end, dragging harsh breaths into his lungs, his voice thick as he said, “Enough, Alysia.”

So all she ended up with was a load of intense frustration that left her sleepless for hours.

She knew that they couldn’t go on like this. Something had to happen to either move their developing relationship along, or…

The or didn’t bear thinking about.

And then her father had another heart attack.

Spencer’s secretary had buzzed him for a visitor, and when he didn’t answer she went in and found him slumped over his desk.
