Beatrice and Hilary looked at each other and burst out laughing.

Hilary answered, “You are quite right, dear. Forgive us.

We are fanciful old fools.”

Beatrice elbowed Lydia and added, “We are not, however, blind old fools, my dear.” She winked. “But you are right. We have no excuse for asking such a question.

Your activities are yours alone. Be on your way, you two.

Enjoy the remainder of the feast. The afternoon is almost over and we shall be forced to move indoors soon.” Catherine returned the goblet to Beatrice. Their hostesses moved off into the gathering. The younger women heard them laughing as they walked away.

Lydia asked, “What brought that on?”

“I am not sure. I felt as if they knew about...this afternoon.”

Lydia blushed again. “They probably do, Catherine. As my aunt said, they are not blind old fools.” The two women stared at each other, then Catherine caught Lydia’s hand and reeled her into a group dancing to a melody played on flutes and drums. Lydia gathered up the hem of her dress and the two women plunged into the dance with abandon.

When the song ended, the gong sounded again.
