“Freezing power? Like the Heart Collector.”

She waved a hand. “Yes, but the poor butler died years ago. A heart attack right during a dinner. How inconvenient for Lady Hyde.”

“Yes, poor Lady Hyde.” I rolled my eyes as she left me alone.

The setting sun cast long shadows on the gravel, and I squinted at the orange glare. A footman was driving Lord Radford’s steam car to the coach house. The car’s golden symbol, a prancing pony, gleamed, giving the illusion the pony’s mane fluttered.

I left the safety of my room and headed to Victor’s office. Good Lord, what if Murk is there. My palms grew clammy at the thought of seeing him again.

Hollom, coming from downstairs, stopped and bowed. “I was about to call you, Your Grace. Lord Radford is in Lord Victor’s studio, and your presence is kindly requested.”

“Thank you.” I bunched a corner of my dark red skirt. “Is Murk there as well?”

“I’m afraid not, Your Grace. Lord Victor sent Murk and Lord Jamie to Mr. Grey’s house and to the colonel’s mansion.”

Oh right, the third name on the list. A pang of disappointment clenched my chest, but it was better this way. I’d keep blushing if Murk was around. Victor’s door was open, and I walked in.

Lord Radford stood up and bowed. His smirk and dark eyes gave him a mischievous air. “Your Grace.”

“Lord Radford.” I sat on my usual armchair close to the fire, and the gentlemen settled themselves down.

Mild annoyance and worry oozed from Lord Radford, forming a green-gray glow around him. He squirmed in his chair and pulled at his cravat.
