A TALE OF TWO SLEEPERS: SLEEPLESS SAM AND SLEEPY SUZY

Sleepy Suzy follows our sleepy seven recipe and wakes up every morning with brain and body refreshed. Sleepless Sam doesn’t.

Sam sits too much during the day. Because his body isn’t as tired at night, his brain gets less of a prompt to sleep. The neurochemical nags he does get, he often ignores. He also has erratic bedtimes and awakening times, which confuses his brain. It doesn’t know when to dial down and when to dial up.

Sam lights up his life at night, just the opposite of what his brain wants. For him, nighttime is time for catching up on emails and for other screen time. He habitually checks his email “one last time” around 10 PM, the worst possible time to expose his sleepy brain to artificial light.

To add more insult to sleep injury, he overdoses on caffeine, both too much and too late in the day. He eats too much too late, and goes to bed with his stomach too full. His gut brain protests by refluxing, giving Sam heartburn, which further keeps him from a restful night’s sleep.

Sam is restless in bed, tossing and turning, for at least an hour before he finally gets to sleep. He wakes up several times at night, so his sleep is fragmented. He doesn’t receive many of the medicines his brain and body need to thrive. And when he finally falls into a much-needed therapeutic sleep at 6 AM, he receives a high dose of stress hormones when his alarm goes off. Sam awakens literally alarmed, unrefreshed, and unhealed.

Which sleeper do you think lives healthier, happier, and longer? Sleepy Suzy or Sleepless Sam?
