CURES FROM YOUR KITCHEN
I’ll describe 50 common health ailments from A to Z and provide why there is a growing trend about at-home coffee cures that’ll get you buzzed. I include tried-and-tested folk remedies (some sound, some quirky), scientific studies, and medical experts’ words of coffee smarts—and my own experiences with ailments treated with coffee. Meet the different roasts, blends, flavored coffees, and drinks that can be your best friend. But caution: Consult your health-care practitioner before putting to work any coffee cure.
1. AGOROPHOBIA (Face the daily grind): Ever met someone who has a fear of open spaces and prefers to stay homebound like memorable characters in films, including the traumatized shrink in Copycat or the reclusive author in Finding Forrester? Some people, like me, who work in a calm home environment, have a mild form of this phobia. (After working in a controlled space it feels like cultural shock to go to an intense grocery store when it’s prime time, so I avoid doing it.) But coffee (regular with caffeine) seems to help give me a sense of wanting to get outdoors and go swimming or walk the dogs, counteracting the feelings of wanting to stay home in my comfort zone. It’s like a gentle nudge to get me to go where I need to go. What Coffee Rx to Use: Opt for an 8-ounce cup of medium-roast coffee (which does contain caffeine) or a blend of half milk and half decaf, which is similar to drinking a cup of green tea caffeine-wise. Milk, with its compound tryptophan, calms nerves.
Why You’ll Be Perked Up! Not only will you get antistress antioxidants in coffee, but the caffeine fix may be just enough to give you the combo effect of motivation to go outdoors and do what you want to do, whether it be run errands, socialize, work, or exercise, and the feel-good effect. Start slowly, and if coffee works for you, the more you face the fear the more you’ll desensitize yourself to facing your fear factor and survive.
