Marisa shook her head as she pulled up in front of the club. She wasn’t sure why she had even agreed to be there. While several hospital staff wanted to get together for some drinks and fun after work on a Saturday night, she wasn’t convinced that she should have agreed to go. This wasn’t her scene. The only reason she was going with it was that she knew Hanna would be there and they were the same age. Yet even that seemed like a skewed reason to make her appearance. She hadn’t spoken to Hanna since Hanna had awkwardly asked if Marisa was sexually attracted to Liz.

But there were bound to be others in the same age group as her, or at least in the rough vicinity. So, she forced herself to make an appearance. She only needed to have a couple of drinks before deciding to leave.

When she stepped out of the car, she looked down at her attire. She didn’t look half bad, at least in her shaky opinion. One thing was certain—she didn’t want to cause any friction with the staff, who might be wondering why she wasn’t going out with the rest of them.

When she entered the club, she looked around. The music that played over the blaring speakers wasn’t a song she recognized but people were already dancing out on the floor, gyrating to the music, like it was the sexual presence that pulled them together.

In two seconds of being there, she considered turning around. Then she spotted Samantha. At least she could have one person to share a pleasant conversation with. On the other side of the floor was Hanna. She was going to avoid her—at least, until she was forced to have another awkward encounter.

She saw others from various floors of the hospital, some she spoke to often, and brief acquaintances whom she didn’t have too many conversations with. She waved to a few who looked in her direction.

This wasn’t so bad. When a waiter passed, she grabbed a beer from the tray and took a long swig. A few more of those and it might be possible she would forget she didn’t want to be there. She took another sip, then cast a glance toward Samantha. She headed over in that direction to talk to her, as she hadn’t had the chance in the week since Samantha’s birthday. Working opposite shifts had made it difficult to carry on with their interrupted conversation. Plus, she did want to know how things had turned out with Samantha’s sister.

“Hey, Marisa. Long time no see.”

Marisa stopped when she saw Liz. It wasn’t surprising that Liz was there, but she hesitated briefly. She had done fairly well making sure she didn’t have to face Liz, but now there was no avoiding it. Liz was right there. And she looked stunning.

Marisa put on a smile. “Hey. How ya doing?”

“Good,” Liz answered. “Over the past week I kind of got the feeling like you’ve been avoiding me. Funny, right?”

No, because I have been avoiding you.
