Charlock led Leo to a stream where the water ran clear over silvery stones.

“You reached her last night. You must find her again,” she said.

“How?” he asked, and she wondered how to instruct someone so ignorant of their talent.

“Look into the water,” she told him. “Not just with your eyes but with your all.”

Leo tried, to be sure. She could see him staring, squinting, glaring, until his eyes began to water and he had to stop and rub them.

“Relax,” she instructed. She covered his eyes with her palm. “Look again but from inside you. Don’t think. Feel. Just as you did with the mist in the tree.”

“I hardly meant to do that,” he said gruffly.

“Exactly. Stop trying so hard,” she told him gently, trying to let her words be soothing to him. “Just think of Poppy. Think of her face, her voice, her eyes looking back at you.”

Then Charlock took her hand from Leo’s face and he looked into the water once more. He blinked and Charlock held her breath until he turned his head away angrily.

“It’s only me. Only my face that I see.”

Charlock sighed to calm herself so she could, in turn, calm him.

“Is there any detail?” she asked. “Any one thing or moment that you can focus on? Just that. No more.” Leo closed his eyes. “Can you do that?” He nodded. “Can you see it clearly in your mind?”

“I can.”

“Then open your eyes and look.”
