I SAW him sitting there, still wearing his work pants and T-shirt. I had just turned ten two days ago, and the rest of my birthday cake was sitting in a bowl on the table getting too hard to eat. Sometimes Mommy cried when Dad was gone on a mission, but I had never seen my dad cry before. It broke my heart and scared me a little.
His hair was very short, and he was built like a wall. His arms were muscular, and his face had begun to look leathery from being out in the sun all the time. His eyes were deep set, and he always seemed to have a frown on his face. Yet, here he sat, two hundred pounds of devil dog, weeping for the loss of his father.
“Dad?” I said, putting my hand on his shoulder. His head spun toward me, and his eyes were bloodshot and swollen. The grief he was in was etched all over his face. I couldn’t help myself and started to cry. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and he grabbed me up, just like when I was little, and sat me in his lap. I knew what had happened. Grandpa, a man I had never met, had passed away. Mom had received a phone call, and earlier that evening I could hear them shouting about it in the bedroom.
“You have to go back! What is wrong with you?” Mom had demanded.
“I am not going back into that damned house. Never again am I stepping foot in there with or without the two of you!” he’d said.
“It’s going to be okay, Dad” I said to him when I looked up at him. “Grandpa is in heaven now.”
Dad smiled, though his face was still soaked from crying, and he nodded. It felt like the time I had fallen and scraped my knee and cried, and Dad offered me ice cream to cheer me up, except only backward….
