âI really hope you have better luck than me,â Damian muttered as they pulled to the side of the house. âThe last time I tried to talk to her, she basically ran away like I was a monster.â
âItâs going to be fine. Just wait here, and Iâll go get her. I told her Iâd meet her in the kitchen to grab your swim trunks, and we know Opal is gone, so sheâs got to be the one to do it. Give me ten minutes,â Sophia said.
Damian watched her disappear inside. He wasnât crazy about the idea of her running around the estate without him, now knowing what he did about the women in his family. It was starting to feel like his family really was cursed. Tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, he looked out over the property. His eyes scanned the horizon before turning to look at the house. All of the windows stood open, carrying a cool breeze throughout.
He could hear voices from the staff as they chatted inside. From where he was sitting, he could see the location where The Sleeping Harpy had gone under. It was a strange place to sink a boat. Not that he claimed any knowledge of such things, but during the low tide, the sea barely covered the tip of the mast. Damian felt a strange longing inside of him to see the wreckage for himself. He could almost feel the cool water lapping at his body as he climbed down into its belly. The photos alone would be worth the journey.
Sophia emerged, with Gretchen following sheepishly behind her. The woman looked around nervously as she skittered to the tracker. Sophia was obviously flustered. Getting Gretchen was supposed to take a couple minutes, but sheâd been gone nearly fifteen. From the looks of things, it hadnât gone as planned. He climbed out of the UTV and leaned against it, trying to make himself appear approachable. She handed him the trunks.
âThanks,â he said. âHow are you and the rest of the staff holding up?â
âFine, thank you, Master Damian. Will you need anything else?â
His jaw clenched. It wasnât the time to split hairs. âActually, I was hoping we could talk to you a bit about your side job cleaning on the weekends.â
Her eyes grew wide. âI've never had any problems with it in the past. I assure you that it doesnât affect my work here.â
âI know. You are a very hard worker. I admire that about you; we both do. I hope you keep working here for a long time to come. I didnât mean to upset you or make you question your work. You see, we wanted to look into my lineage more, and it turns out some of those records are at the local police stationâ¦or hutâ¦I'm not sure what you call it.â
âIâd be happy to give you my father's number.â
âWell, now, thatâs where we are running into a bit of a problem. He and I had a bit of a confrontation earlier.
