She woke in a panic, shocked at the lack of pain in her body as she sat upright and checked herself for wounds. What had happened was still a blur to her. Instantly, she realized she wasn’t alone in her bedroom as Darrel quickly rose from where he’d been sitting and moved to her side. He checked her pulse, shining a light into her eyes and asking her an onslaught of questions before being satisfied that she was telling the truth about feeling fine. Her arm ached, but it was easy to see why. There was an IV hooked to a metal rod next to the bed.

“It’s just a saline solution,” he assured her. “I didn’t know what to do when I got here and thought it would help you recover.”

“Recover from what?” she asked.

He sighed. “Well, to be honest, I’m not really sure. By the time I got here, you were puking and conscious, but barely. Helena said you would be fine, but you were pretty dehydrated. How much did you have to drink?”

“How much did I have to drink of what? I haven’t had any alcohol today!”

Darrel frowned. “All right, well, there isn’t much else I can do unless you want me to run some tests, but I don’t think they are necessary. You know you can talk to me if you’re having problems, though, right Beverly?”

“I’m not having problems…well, not mental problems at least. What is going on?”

“When I got here, you were covered in whiskey…I just assumed you had a few too many drinks and the women were overreacting, but you were really vomiting, and that’s the second saline solution I’ve given you since you’ve been up here. I don’t want to upset you more, but if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck…”

“I didn’t have anything to drink,” she hissed. “I think you should go. Thanks for…well, the IV, I guess.”

“Beverly—”

“Please just go, okay? I don’t have the energy to deal with this right now. Would you mind sending in the others?”

“Of course,” he muttered.

She still didn’t understand what was going on, but when the two elderly women rushed into her room, the concern was quickly forgotten. They fawned over her like a child, insisting that she drink some tea and eat a little something. At their bequest, she did as they asked and listened to the mundane chatter while struggling to understand what had happened. Beverly felt bad for being short with the doctor, but she wanted to be with people she knew and trusted. He didn’t meet those ranks, at least not yet.

“We were so worried about you, sweetheart,” Helena said. “When Meredith came and got me, I thought for sure we were going to lose you. Lucky for us, I still knew where Bobby liked to stash his whiskey. I guess it’s a good thing I never had a taste for it over the years.”

“What the hell happened to me?” she asked. “One second, I was picking flowers, and the next, I was lying in bed.
