Susan was as level-headed and grounded as anyone David knew, but unless she was experiencing some hallucinatory episode or had had some very realistic nightmare, there seemed to be no other explanation than she had just made this all up to try to sway him. But Susan was no liar, leaving David to suspect that her imagination and strong desire to get him to believe in the supernatural being at work at the Brandt were responsible.

When she was done, she threw back the last of her scotch and sighed.

“I know how incredulous and impossible it all sounds, David, but I swear, it really happened.”

He nodded and set his drink on the table beside her empty glass.

“So what about the hallway?” David said softly, trying to get her to see this for what it probably was.

“I can’t explain that, David…but I swear that was how it looked when I came to get you.”

“Okay, so this apparition, this emanation or whatever came to you, asking you to what was it…help make it right?”

“That is what he said.”

“And when you didn’t reply, that’s when it all went nuts?”

“I know how it all sounds, David, especially when the hallway looks normal now. Maybe I’m losing my mind.”

David finished off his own drink and looked at her while he held her hands in his.

“I don’t think you’re losing your mind, Susan. But what I do think is that maybe digging into all of the legends and stuff about the Brandt and Tibbets has made your mind overly susceptible to suggestion. I also realize your past experience is contributing to this as well. But there just seems to be nothing here to back up your story, okay?”

Susan said nothing, knowing this was David’s way of trying to be sensitive and supportive of her while simultaneously letting her know his stance on the supernatural had not changed…that it was just the stuff of movies and books. And quite frankly, if she had been in his shoes, she thought herself likely to see a situation like this just as he was. She also knew that he most likely suspected she had been drinking something a little stronger than herbal tea, but at least he’d had the decency not to suggest she had been drunk.

Without any proof of what had happened, and the fact that David swore he had heard nothing gave Susan real concern that he might, in fact, be closer to the truth than she was. Had she just been wandering around amid a nightmare? Or had she been the victim of some mind-altering hallucination brought on by her curiosity in the manor and Maggie Gleason’s story? Neither felt right in her gut or head, which left Susan the really terrifying last possibility: had perhaps this been real, but all in her head? Had everything she had come across in the last month or so been so vivid and alive in her subconscious that the spirit of Timothy Edgecroft had somehow managed to pry his way in
