Dreams

Karaa reached inside her cloak and pulled out the letter bearing her order’s seal. She ran her finger across the wax serpent being impaled by a rod. It filled her with an odd sense of foreboding. From her perspective, Riverbend was no more than a primitive outpost boasting only a few hints of civilization, although the progress on the central palace was notable. Less than two months had passed since her first visit, and she was not anxious to return.

On her last assignment, she had acted as a mediator between the dwarven and elven architects. Ambassador Baanar had been cordial enough, but the negotiations had gone painfully slow. A compromise had been finally struck, but it had made no one truly happy. Karaa viewed it as a personal failure. She had been forced to run poor Iilliar ragged gathering letters of authority to force a compromise. It had been necessary but high-handed and too… dwarvish. The experience had left a bad taste in her mouth.

Karaa waited a few minutes and then halted her small caravan. She snapped the seal on the envelope and read the letter.
