The obligatory greeting to flush out any lurking creepers went unanswered.

To give the place a visual sweep, Gareth, Amber, and Mateo went to the left while Meredith, Kirk, and Aries headed to the right. Like most large stores, solar slats in the ceiling illuminated the dim shelves inside.

With his Glock drawn, Kirk scanned the checkout lanes. Like so many other things, cash registers were now only relics of a lost world. Except for their footsteps and the dog’s nails clicking on the floor, the large building was silent and eerie. He’d never realized how much sound there was in the world until there were so few people left to make any. Unlike Walgreens, these shelves appear unmolested for the most part. The decaying fruits and vegetables were rancid and they smelled even worse than they looked. Because of the intense heat of the still air inside, the smells were fetid and putrid. The collective buzzing of countless flies hummed as they passed the produce.

“How did all these flies get in here?” Meredith asked.

Aries snapped at a fly trying to land on his snout.

“Are they fruit flies?” Kirk asked.

“I’m no fly expert, but I’m pretty sure most of these are houseflies.”

He shrugged. “An open back door?”

“That’s what I’m betting on.”

Kirk looked at Meredith, who was holding her nose. “Come on. Let’s get away from this fresh produce.”

Cautiously, they ventured down the wide aisle. “Can I talk to you, Kirk?”

“Sure,” he replied, his eyes not straying from his scans of the shadowy interior. “What’s on your mind?”

“That scene outside with Brandon.”

Saying nothing, Kirk glanced back at her briefly before his eyes returned to the path.

“You were a little harsh with him,” Meredith stated factually.

Staring ahead, he said. “He didn’t listen to me.”

“And then you shoved him out of the way when he didn’t comply.” Meredith swatted at a fly. “You’re stronger than him. Hell, you’re stronger than all of us.”

“What’s your point?” Kirk asked frostily.

“My point is that you didn’t have to humiliate Brandon. I would’ve never pegged you as a person who’d pick on someone weaker than them.”

Kirk stopped in his tracks, his body rigid. “What are you trying to slow-walk me to, Meredith?”

“You’ve already put him in his place – you don’t have to be a bully.”

He turned to her, his bright silver eyes cold. “So, I’m a bully?”

Meredith didn’t care how strong or ferocious Kirk was—she was unafraid to express herself. “In that situation, yes.”

“He was an idiot,” Kirk began. “We have no time for his obstinate nonsense. I’m the one in charge of this excursion, so he should’ve stepped aside.”

“Brandon wasn’t trying to be the Alpha Male – he’s trying to prove himself to the group as an asset!” Meredith declared.

“And as far as being a bully,” Kirk went on as if he’d not heard her, “when I was a kid, I spent years being pushed around. They called me everything from a white trash wimp to a faggot, so if I don’t sympathize with the rich fraternity boy, that’s tough shit for him.
