Emma was still in her pyjamas mid-afternoon. She had made herself the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs she had bought to have with Nick for breakfast and now lay on the sofa, the faux fur throw over her, her weekend work completed on the floor beside her and her MacBook open on her lap as she scrolled through Kate’s Twitter feed. It was all very dull stuff, she thought, far too PC to be even remotely interesting. The woman clearly had enough social conscience for half of London, lobbying MPs, outing bad landlords, doing her bit for the good and poor in the community. Quite frankly it bored Emma to death, and so far, it had proved distinctly unfruitful. It was time, she decided, to try another tack.

Reaching for her phone, Emma rang one of the trainees assigned to her team. She was hoping the girl would answer with her name because she couldn’t quite remember it. She did and Emma said, “Sophie, glad I caught you. I’m not interrupting anything am I?”

Emma knew of course that she probably was, and that Sophie would never say so. Shit job, trainee, but excellent prospects, especially if you killed yourself to get on.

“Good,” Emma said. “I’ve got a small job for you this weekend, if it’s not too much trouble?”

Emma waited for Sophie to assent that it wasn’t too much trouble, which she did just moments later and then continued; “There’s a charitable organisation - London based - that we’re thinking could be a good target for our CSR initiative, maybe some investment? It’s called Legalhub and I’d like you to do a thorough investigation into its legal and financial history please.”

It was hardly a small job, not now she’d articulated it, but Emma didn’t care. Weekend or not, work had to be done. “If I could have it by Monday, please Sophie? Monday close of day will be fine and that should give you ample time Monday a.m. to check with any regulatory bodies that might be closed over the weekend, the Charities Commission and the like.”

Emma shut her laptop and placed it on the floor. “Good, that would be great, thank you Sophie. Yes, I’ll put a meeting in my diary for the afternoon on Monday and send you an invite.”

She heard a muffled silence and knew that Sophie had her hand over the microphone, probably explaining to the boyfriend that she had to go into the office. Emma waited. Thank God those days were over, the groping, gofer days. “Thanks Sophie,” she said, cutting short the silence. “See you on Monday.” And she pressed end. Not my problem, she thought, and she stood up to get herself a glass of wine.
