Chapter 10

Camino arrived at my place less than an hour later.

“Is church over already?” I asked as I opened the door.

She hurried inside. “No, but I found out what I wanted to know, and Augustus was being overly flirty.”

I chuckled. “You were certainly right about him. Camino, your earbuds were a huge success!”

She beamed from ear to ear. “I need to go home and lie down now. That was exhausting. I’ll just fetch my equipment and go.”

“Thyme and I were discussing who we should investigate next,” I told her. “Alder’s at his office working on a case, and that gives me a window of opportunity to do some snooping.”

Camino looked up from packing up the equipment. “And I expect you both decided to investigate Jack Jenkins today?”

We both nodded.

She disagreed. “No, I think you should go to his business on a working day, otherwise it will look too suspicious if you go to his home to question him.”

“Camino does have a point,” Thyme said to me.

I agreed. “But Camino, that was an absolute success!”

“I told you it would be, didn’t I! Now, even if you find out something exciting, don’t call me for the next few hours. I’m absolutely exhausted, and my feet are killing me. I haven’t worn stripper heels for years.”

With that, she walked to the door, leaving me wondering when and where she last wore the stripper heels.

“I think we should investigate Gladys Mosley this afternoon,” Thyme said to me after I shut and locked the front door.

“How are we going to investigate her?” I pulled a face. “She’s rather mean, if you haven’t noticed.”

Thyme let out a shriek. “It’s that girl! Arabella! She was watching us through the window.”

I ran to the window, but by the time I got there, Arabella was running down the garden path.

Thyme pushed past me and headed for the front door. I watched as she too ran down my garden path.

Moments later, Thyme returned. “I couldn’t catch her,” she said. “We’ll have to call the police.”

“Why? She didn’t do it.”

Thyme shot me a look and called the police. “Can I speak to Detective Burnham, please?”

Moments later, she said, “I’m at Amelia’s house and that girl, Arabella, was looking in the window at us.” She proceeded to explain what just happened, and then hung up. To me, she said, “The detective will be here in a minute.”

I was exasperated. “What does he think he will gain from coming here? She only looked in the window at us, and she’s probably well and truly gone by now.”

Thyme simply shrugged. “Amelia, don’t you think it was suspicious that she was watching us through the window?”

“Not at all. It’s not as if we were engaged in some covert activity. What would she hope to gain? She was just being curious.”

“I don’t like it,” she muttered.

I was glad I hadn’t told Thyme that Arabella was a Dark Witch.

Thyme was still talking. “We will have to figure out how to ask Gladys questions. She’s not the friendliest person out there.
