Guy and Rafi lay length by length on his bed, his flesh-and-blood running up against hers.

Rafi unlatched her lips from his and moved her head away, trying to slow them both down, but he kept kissing her, her neck, her shoulder, her ear, and as he kissed her she leant back into him because there was nothing in the world that had ever felt so good.

Rafi pulled her mouth away for a second time and took a deep breath, blowing out slowly and deliberately.

‘I have to go in one minute,’ she said.

‘Okay,’ he said.

And he started kissing her again. Resistance was useless. This guy, this mouth, these hands … Rafi was powerless to stop him – or, okay, that wasn’t true, but why would she want to? Why on earth would she want to stop feeling like this?

She pulled her mouth away from his again. If she didn’t get some space, if she didn’t get some air, she wasn’t sure what would happen. Although she suspected that if she didn’t get some space, whatever happened would be absolutely brilliant.

You only just met him, her brain said.

But it feels so good.

He might be using you, her brain said.

He’s not using me. I can tell.

You’ve been drinking. You’ll regret it.

So what if I’m drunk. Who cares.

You have to get back to Joshie.

‘I’ve got to get back to Joshie,’ Rafi repeated out loud. ‘I’m supposed to be babysitting him. My mum’s looking after him for me, but I said I’d be back before twelve.’

Guy lay back from her and put his hands behind his head, grinning.

‘The night is but a puppy,’ he said, his entire body open to her, an invitation for her to lean forward and continue where they’d left off.

‘I can’t,’ she said.‘I have to go. And I’ve gotta find my friend.’

Demonstrating a strength of character she didn’t know she had, Rafi stood up from the bed and looked down at Guy. Keeping distance between them was the only thing that would help her stick to her plan of being home before twelve.

He stood up and brought her towards him one last time.

‘I’ll walk you out,’ he said.
