John Ratey MD, author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, says that ‘in addition to promoting better muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness, exercise is one of the best treatments we have for most psychiatric problems’. He also explains that ‘exercise unleashes a cascade of neurochemicals and growth factors that serve to counter the affects of aging’.
One of the many reasons why exercising is so good for the mind (and slowing down aging) is that it increases the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain accounts for only about 2% of our overall body weight, but uses over 20% of our oxygen intake. Exercising improves the cardiovascular system and increases the amount of blood and therefore oxygen that reaches the brain. And here’s another interesting fact I came upon in my research. Apparently the brain can only fire off about 2% of its neurons at once, because it uses up so much energy to do so that firing off any more than that would exhaust us to the point of passing out. This made me realize that as well as engaging in physical activity, actively and effectively using the mind is also a good weight loss strategy.
As the medical professionals I have quoted above have found, physical activity is not only great for our body inside and out, it also has an enormous impact on our mental and emotional health.
