JESUS OF THE BATHROOM WALL
If the Virgin Mary could be found in a grilled cheese sandwich then it should come as no surprise that Jesus was spotted in a plaster wall next to a bathroom shower just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Item 6186339869 went live on June 11, 2005, and was titled âJesus Christ Image Icon Materializes in Plaster Wall.â
According to the seller, he first noticed the image when he stepped out of the shower on June 11. He was also quick to try to relieve skeptics of any doubts they might have about his sale, saying at the outset that the wall had not been doctored and that the photos he posted on eBay had not been staged. The seller declined all requests to speak with radio shows, going so far as to add a line to his auction description stating that he would not do radio interviews because âinterviews make Baby Jebus cry.â
As interest in the relic intensified, the seller required that potential bidders register in advance of bidding. This measure kept the auction from being overwhelmed by hoax bidders, but it probably also served to keep the relic from soaring in value, as fake bids tend to push interested parties into bidding higher than they otherwise would have to. Despite more than 125,000 visits, the item received only one bid and sold for the initial asking price of $1,999.99. The proceeds should be enough for the seller to at least repair the hole in the wall the removal of the plaster caused.
Perhaps coincidentally, the bathroom wall image of Jesus was discovered just a few hundred miles from Chicago where, in the spring of 2005, believers made worldwide headlines by erecting a shrine to a water stain bearing the image of Jesus that had appeared on an underpass of the Dan Ryan Expressway. Given the time and distance between the two appearances, one might advance the argument that Jesus was walking east across the upper Midwest during the spring of 2005.
