Chapter 5

“Good morning, gentlemen, table for four?” LilyAnn Martino asked the four men. Two of them, Daggs and Montgomery Malloy, were her bosses’ sons. She worked at Malloy’s on the weekends and here at Valery’s during the week.

“That would be great, LilyAnn,” Montgomery said as he looked her over. She shyly looked away and led them to a back booth section. They made her nervous and so did Jessup and Jake McCandle, who were with them. They were all law enforcement and military, like most of the men around town. She had been living in Casper for a year now and trying to put her life back together. It didn’t help that there were still connections to her past, to her family and especially to Jordon and Ben, her brothers. When she thought of them she thought of Fredo, the military, the criminal activity and his obsession with her. Thank God she got away. They knew she lived in Texas still, and they kept their distance but didn’t stop the communication with her. She wished they would. They kept a hold on her because of one mistake, and it wasn’t even her own. She had no idea what they were up to, or that picking up Jordon behind a corner store had meant he was involved with shooting and killing a cop. It made her feel sick the moment she found out it was him. Of course they all used it against her and said she would be an accessary to murder and be charged and maybe killed for driving the getaway car. She shivered as she walked and forced the bad thoughts from her head. She had a new life and they were no longer going to have a hold on her. She worked, she exercised and stayed home. That was her life. As she took the men’s drink orders she felt this guilty feeling in her gut. She had no reason to feel guilty. She wasn’t a criminal. Well, not really, but she knew a killer. A cop killer and other soldiers hired out to kill. She gulped.

“So the specials today are open roast turkey sandwich on homemade sourdough bread with all the trimmings, plus we have a triple Tom on special, that’s three all beef patties with cheddar cheese melted between each burger, an egg, shredded fried onions on top on a brioche bun with your choice of potato fries, home fries or sweet potato fries.”

“No need to go on, sugar, I’ll take the triple Tom burgers,” Daggs told her and his brother Montgomery said he wanted the same while Jessup and Jake McCandle requested the open turkey specials. She smiled and then walked away but felt their eyes on her. When she got to the counter Melanie, smiled and gave her side a nudge.

“Girl, you stole my table,” Melanie said to her. She was a new girl at Valery’s but also a friend to the Simmons family so she thought she could get away with anything. She wasn’t even good at waitressing and usually LilyAnn had to pick up the slack.
