and take you with them

and I press a summer stone

against my skin.

Autumn is here

and didn’t bring you

in my palm to keep it warm.

Winter comes

and bites all the same,

but in my hand

there is one last drop

of sunlight.

There is one last piece

of you.

I almost bought a plane ticket

when she left. I thought,

maybe things would have been

different, if I could have

just held her.

planted my feet in the earth

in front of her and

promised that would be

where I’d grow.
