THE APPROACH TO ELECTIVE SURGERIES
Joining Loweâs in buying elective surgeries from the Cleveland Clinic are Boeing, Walmart, Kohlâs, Rich Products Corp., and Alliance Oil.
PepsiCo cut a similar deal in 2011 with The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for cost-effective cardiac and joint replacement surgeries. PepsiCo, with a quarter-million insured lives, got more than a 25 percent participation rate for such elective surgeries in its first year. The company covers travel costs and waives all out-of-pocket charges for its people utilizing this arrangement.
âThese programs are designed to help our employees and their families to live healthier lives and ensure a high level of workforce support, which, in turn, helps PepsiCo be a successful company,â said Bruce Monte, senior director of health and benefits.
Look at it another way: Why would employers allow employees to be operated on at an inferior hospital? It would border on unethical.
In 2012, Loweâs expanded its contract with Cleveland Clinic to include spinal surgeries. It wouldnât be enlarging the relationship if the cardiac outsourcing werenât working beautifully.
Bob Ihrie, Loweâs senior vice president, said, âHaving the correct diagnoses, combined with surgery by the undisputed leaders in the field, will produce the highest-quality outcomes.â
Loweâs, which has 200,000 members in its self-insured plan, reported participation beyond expectations, but gave no actual numbers. Employees see lower out-of-pocket costs and have their entire trip expenses covered by the company.
