‘I can’t believe you lot. When the hell will you respect other people’s property?’

LJ squinted at the man in front of him. Built like a boxer with a backpack slung over one shoulder, he wasn’t someone LJ wanted to take on. He wasn’t the black guy. This one had small eyes and a big chin. Same height as LJ but square. Solid. The type who wouldn’t think twice about landing a punch by the look of him.

LJ didn’t need that. His face already throbbed like a bitch from where Lilijana had reared her head back. He thought initially he’d avoided the blow, but now his adrenaline had taken a dive, the aches and pains were starting to make themselves apparent.

This guy hadn’t followed him from the squat. Chased him. No, he was someone else.

‘What the fuck are you talking about?’

The guy flinched. Took a step back. Maybe with his size he wasn’t used to people challenging his aggression. But LJ had had enough. He wasn’t prepared to give way.

‘You’ve parked over my drive.’

LJ ran a quick check over his vehicle. The back end jutted across the drive of a large, imposing house. Blank windows reflected a twinkle of light from the streetlamp.

LJ spread his arms and shrugged. ‘I’ve not been long. You can hardly whine about it, mate. I mean who needs access to their drives at this time of the fucking morning?’

‘Shift-workers, you thick shit. Me! I’ve just got off a twelve-hour shift and I want to get into my drive.’ He pointed way down the street to some anonymous car that LJ supposed he was meant to recognise. ‘I’ve had to park all the way at the end of my own fucking road and walk.’

LJ couldn’t give a damn. Did he think he was hard done by just because someone had made it difficult to get into his drive? ‘You do know you could get a double decker bus through that gap, don’t you, mate?’

Shock registered on the guy’s face as LJ stepped around him, clicking the key fob, so the locks disengaged on his own car.

‘I don’t want to damage my car.’ The guy’s voice turned from aggressive to more conciliatory, but LJ wasn’t in the mood. That veil of red mist still hovered on the periphery of his vision.

He didn’t have the time or patience for this shit.

He swung the car door open. ‘Not my problem, mate.’

He edged into the driver’s seat and leaned over to pull the door shut behind him.

He never saw the fist that ploughed into his face, but his head snapped back, smacking against the edge of the headrest, and his breath whooshed from his body. The door slammed shut against his hand, so his fingers gave a protesting crunch and LJ sat momentarily stunned, watching through his driver’s mirror as the man strode down the street in the direction of his car. Obviously with the intention of moving it onto his drive once LJ moved.

Fury grabbed LJ by the throat, and he reached for the door handle.
