Chapter 14:

“Why do you keep checking your phone?” Layla popped up next to her, dropping her elbows against the countertop.

Guiltily, Blair locked the screen and shoved the device back into her pocket. The two of them had gone to the restaurant after school. She’d only agreed because she’d hoped it would help keep her distracted, but it’d been slow the past three hours. Layla had spent most of that time studying, leaving Blair with nothing to do but focus on the one thing she’d been trying to avoid.

“Is this about Wren?” Layla asked absently, though it was easy to see through what she was doing. She was clearly interested in the answer, peeking over at Blair when she took too long to respond. “What? He wasn’t in school today and the two of you seem like you’ve been getting along recently.”

“We’re just…” She sighed, realizing telling a lie about studying wasn’t going to work on her best friend. “I don’t even know. It’s whatever.”

“It’s obviously not.” Layla turned and leapt up onto the countertop, doing a quick check in the back to make sure her parents were too busy prepping food to notice. “Is he sick?”

“I’m not sure,” she admitted, giving up trying to act nonchalant about the whole thing.

Truthfully, it’d be nice to have someone to talk to about all of this. So long as she didn’t mention anything about goblins, and tweaked a few minor details, it shouldn’t be a problem, right?

“I think there was a family emergency or something last night,” she said, hoping that was vague enough and it wouldn’t come back later to bite her in the ass. “He hasn’t texted me back, so I haven’t heard from him since.”

“You don’t think he’s okay?” Layla asked. “You know where he lives, right? Why don’t you go check on him?”

“You’re joking.”

“Why not?”

“We’ve been maybe-friends for less than two weeks?” That hadn’t stopped him from showing up at her place, but she kept that detail to herself.

“So?” Layla began swinging her legs, tapping her heels lightly against the drawers. “I didn’t realize there was a time count on when it became acceptable for friends to do friendly things for one another.”

Blair rolled her eyes.

“I’m serious,” Layla insisted. “Who cares how long you’ve hung out? You’re worried, aren’t you?”

She was…

“Then go check on him. If he’s a dick about it, you’ll know he’s not worth your time and won’t worry later on when something else happens. If he’s not and he appreciates the gesture, you’ve advanced your friendship.” She shrugged.

Blair cocked her head. “Wow, you’re seriously mature, you know that?”

“Of course.” She flipped her long hair over her shoulder dramatically. “I’m the most—”

“Layla!” her mother scolded from the back and they turned to find her angrily waving a batter covered hand. “Get down from there right now! What if a customer saw you?”

She dropped to her feet so fast it almost gave Blair whiplash. “Sorry!”

Her mom continued, this time in Chinese, and Blair tried to muffle her chuckles so Mrs.
